Her adventure, which includes harp music and the phrase “I have to get back to my friends,” ends with monks (albeit fake ones) and an anachronistic shot of One World Trade Center (Piper entered prison in 2012 the building’s spire wasn’t lit until 2013). As Poussey’s body gets colder and colder on the cafeteria floor, we see a living, breathing version of her past self navigating a surreal night in New York City. for the first time-allows Samira Wiley’s smiling, engaging face to haunt the finale.

And even though Poussey’s death breaks up the most functional lesbian relationship on the show-an especially problematic trend on TV this year-there’s no arguing that her murder was a meaningless stunt. The result-a searing episode called “Toast Can Never Be Bread Again”-demonstrates the Netflix show at the height of its powers. Instead, Orange Is the New Black dedicates all 77 minutes of its oversized season finale to the fallout of her death. There’s no mystery around her death, no chance of a last-minute resurrection, no cliffhanger (at least, related to her) engineered for maximum shock value.
Poussey dies in the show’s penultimate episode. It’s horrible and tragic and, to its credit, the series didn’t cheapen it one bit. Like Garner seemed to be, Poussey was accidentally choked to death while being restrained-and there are no arguments in the world of Orange Is the New Black that can justify her death (try as the self-interested prison P.R. Poussey’s final moments invoke the death of Eric Garner, the 43-year-old Staten Island resident whose dying words-“I can’t breathe”-became a slogan of the Black Lives Matter movement. Instead, the show found its inspiration in real-world headlines. In the end, though, Orange Is the New Black didn’t lean on genre conventions.
